Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS)
Classification society Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) was established on 31 December 1913.
Since 1969 RS has been a member of International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Main objectives:
- providing safety of life at sea;
- providing safe navigation of ships;
- safe carriage of goods by sea and in inland waters;
- promoting environmental protection.

Federal Agency of Sea and River Transport
As of the year 2000 maritime transport comprised 10 major state and joint-stock shipping companies and about 300 private shipping companies, 44 commercial ports, 146 berths owned by commercial structures, 13 shipyards, the Russian Register of Shipping, 4 research institutes and 2 design bureaus, 3 naval (maritime) academies, 6 colleges and 40-odd other enterprises and entities.
